Jéssica Prata’s MSc Defense

On April, 3rd, 2020, Miss Jessica Prata was called for her Master’s thesis defense.

The defense took place as a virtual meeting due to the social distancing imposed as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, but there was no major issue because of that and, at the end of the session, we had the honor to welcome a new Master of Science in Civil Engineering to the worldwide academic community.

I have  been her co-supervisor  together with Prof. Rodrigo Rosa. Prof.  Patrício Pires and Prof. Daniel Cavalieri were the other Examining Committee members in that session.

The original thesis title freely translated to English is: DIESEL-ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE’S ENGINE FAIL PREDICTION BASED ON LUBRICATING OIL ANALYSIS BY MEANS OF MACHINE LEARNING TECHNIQUES.

I send to Miss Jessica Prata my warmest congratulations on her hardworking and remarkable achievement.

Taking part in this applied academic study gave me the chance to share a little and to learn a lot about predictive analytics techniques for decision support in asset health monitoring and railroad strategic planning which is one of my preferred research topics.

I would like to register my gratitude to Prof. Rodrigo Rosa for the invitation to co-supervise this thesis with him.

This thesis project is the result of a partnership between VALE, FAPES and UFES and aims to produce a preliminary study and, maybe, a protoype model to solve a real live industry problem, so I would also like to express my gratitude to my colleagues  from the AI Center and from the locomotive maintenance shop from Vale who joined Prof. Rodrigo Rosa and me to provide valuable information and guidance to the project development. In this context, I would like to nominate, specifically, Marcos Cotta, Rafael Lychowski, Edson Antonio, Adilson Andreão, João Paulo Dias, and Alanderson Dalmaso.
