This post is to remember some important accomplishments from last quarter 2017, that I forgot to record here in my personal blog. I selected one achievement from each aspect of my life: Professional, Academic and Personal, but as I went on writing this article I found out that there is a mix of these aspects in each one.

Professional

My wife, me and the CIO at Vale in my 30th work anniversary

On November, 21st, I celebrated three decades of engagement, growth, opportunities, challenges and recognitions as an employee at Vale.

It is a lifetime dedicated to a company! I put this achievement under “Professional” heading but it is a kind of personal, because it recalls “life”.

It is awesome how technology changed along these 30 years and, so, how I changed my professional profile along with it. From a mainframe systems programmer in late 1980s to a data scientist today!

But, in brief, what really imports is the present day. And today I am proud to make part of a team that will foster a huge saving to the company this year (link to text in Portuguese).

Academic

On December, 12th, I had the honour to be a member of one more Master of Science Examination Board at UFES.

I took part in Miss Patricia Costa Louzada’s thesis defense tittled “Modelo matemático para planejamento da distribuição integrada de vagões e locomotivas para formação de trens” (free trasnaltion: Mathematical Model for rail cars and locomotives integrated distribution for train formation”).

Along with the assessment of Miss Louzada’s research work I had the opportunity to check and improve a lot in my technical and academic knowledge about railroad operations and planning. A playfull and enjoyable activity for me, because I love applied industrial engeneering research.

I put this achievement under “Academic” heading but it is a bit personal, because I go fot it. Besides that, there is also a professional flavor in it, as it is, in brief, an application to tackle a real world industry problem.

Once again I would like to register my gratitude to Prof. Rodrigo de Alvarenga Rosa for the invitation to take part in the examination board and give my congratulations to Miss Louzada for her achievement.

Personal

On December, 9th, I was awarded with the first medal in my volunteer career at the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM):

awarded by the National Executive Board of Directors from União dos Escoteiros do Brasil – Brazilian Scout Union (UEB).

Being the President of the Sea Scout Group Ilha de Vitória  gives me the opportunity to develop skills I have never had the chance to try before;

To be eligible for such award, the scout volunteer must render at least two years of outstanding and proven services to the Local Scout Unit.

I put this achievement under “Personal” heading but it is a kind of professional, because it it recalls volunteer service helping to make a better world and it is all about a personal choice of mine.
